I'm 29 years old and have been living at the NAHVI houses for the past eight years. I moved out here because I wanted to become more independent. I came here from school after the vocational course in St. Joseph's. At the time there were no accommodation services for the visually impaired. I came here to learn what it is really like to be independent and to be my own person. I like the services that are provided by NAHVI like horticulture, music and art. I have a big interest in horticulture as well as music and art. I play the guitar and I do lessons every Thursday. A teacher comes here every week to teach us music. I've done computer training and completed the ECDL course and I've done a course in horticulture for two years for which I've achieved my FETAC Level 4. I have also done telephony training and worked as a receptionist in St. Joseph's and then I decided that I wanted to focus on horticulture so I do work experience in St. Joseph's two days a week in the Sense and GrowGarden.
NAHVI has really helped me become my own person. I used to be really scared of going out and doing things, I was frightened of everything and St. Joseph's and NAHVI have helped me come a long way. If I want to go out anywhere with friends I can get up and go myself. NAHVI has given me so much confidence and I've learned to go out and do things for myself. We all take it in turns to do household chores and we all help each other out in each of the houses.
I've been here since 2001 and it's been a great experience so far.
